I’ve found myself listening to more and more podcasts recently. Either when driving to and from work, pre-lock down of course, or when I’m cooking or relaxing at home. They are a great way to learn more about a particular topic. Most feature guests who have been there and done it so you also get the additional insight and tips on what work and what doesn’t.

So, I thought I’d share some of my favourite data-related podcasts.

Data Stories

Data Stories focusses on how we consume data and touches on topics around data visualisation and storytelling. At the time of writing there are just under 160 episodes online. I got in to Data Stories last year when I was researching data visualisation best practice for a data strategy, I was writing.

Enrico and Moritz are great hosts and are both experienced data visualisation professionals and this comes across in the podcast. They ask pertinent questions and really engage with the guests.

Episode 132 features one of my favourite data-viz practitioners — Andy Kirk.

Data Leaders of the North

DLOTN is a roundtable event hosted by Lawrence Harvey, usually in Manchester. Recently they have started to release a pre-recorded podcast with members of the DLOTN panel. They are only one episode in but already I can tell this is going to be a good series of podcasts.

The first episode features Martin Squires, Director of Advanced Analytics at Pets at Home. Martin talks about storytelling with data and leans on his experience to share some tips to make communicating data easier for data scientists. Martin, and host Kyle, really bring the topic alive and the episode sounds relaxed and informal — which is a good thing in my book.

I’m definitely looking forward to the next episode.

How AI Built This

How AI Built This is a podcast by Liam Wilson from Cathcart Associates. This series has an informal interview style and host Liam talks to data professionals from Manchester and Edinburgh. Liam really knows his guests and really strives to share this via the podcast series. His chats are funny and definitely informal!

The series has a mix of guests from both start-ups and established companies and really brings to life some of the projects they are working on. I like this podcast because you finish each episode really feeling like you know the guest a little bit more!

Data Framed

Data Framed is series of podcasts from DataCamp — the online data science learning platform. As you can probably guess this podcast focusses on data science and invites senior data leaders to talk about their approach to data science.

There are some great topics and this series has an international focus which is great. Episode 55 looks at getting your first data science job and this is a really interesting discussion about what it takes to be a data scientist.

Hub & Spoken

Hub & Spoken is a podcast ran by Cynozure and the CDO Hub. Jason talks to top data and business leaders and really gets to understand how companies can unlock value from data.

This series is aimed more at fellow data leaders and has some really great insight to share. Topics really vary and pretty much every aspect of data is covered in the 159 episodes. I often use this series when I’m struggling on a particular topic of data — I skim through the list of episodes and usually find someone has spoken about it on an episode!

Let me know what you think about theses podcasts or if you’ve got a series that you recommend in the comments below.
